The Industrial City

This projects is challenging existing infrastructures in a post-industrial landscape through the implementation of a new form of large-scale industrial production. The thesis argument is that the remnants of heavy industry in the form of large scale infrastructure in post-industrial landscapes, as they can be found in many of todays metropolitan cities, have the potential to adopt to the ongoing shift away from heavy industry towards high tech, instead of, regarding current re-vitalisation strategies, being used in an observant, non engaging manner and though, not exploiting its full potential. By making actual use of the existing infrastructure the implementation of a contemporary form of industry has the potential to counter-balance the ongoing developments of such landscapes into a mix of office, residential and leisure. This implementation of material production (wind-turbine blades) into the framework of post industrial landscapes will here be investigates through the use of an existing corporate body in order to give scale and value to the thesis argument. This corporation reflects the stated shift from heavy industry towards high tech industry in order to suit the overall argument. The staging of large scale, sophisticated industrial production and the accompanied logistics within the context of post industrial landscapes is what this project seeks to achieve. Throughout the project, The industrial city is here investigated as an architectural project in which not only the large container of production changes the scale to the city, but also the infrastructures found on site are largely influenced by such industrial activity. With this implementation as a starting point, the visible activation of the existing infrastructure will be accompanied by a certain transformation towards a more site responding development strategy which than has the potential to define a new form of coexistence of industrial production and urbanity.
