Topic
Given was a site in Alt-Saarbrücken next to the Autobahn. The task was to develop a urban planning concept with main focus in design on the noth-west part of the plot next to the campus of the University of Applied Sciences.
Concept
The first point of the urban planning concept was to open the site from the main road with a high quality activity and pedestrian zone. Secondly, the aim was to create a representative end for the campus with an extensive recreation area.
Two equal blocks lead the campus avenue to a local square on which the
axis from the main road and the avenue converge. This axis acts as an activity area with playgrounds, cafes, water fountains and tree arrangements.
A passage leads from the local sqare to a new park in the north-east area of the site. From there it is possible to cross the Autobahn over a new bridge.
Typology
A residential area with private inner courtyard and parking is located in the southern part of the site. In the north, private and student housing take place. Balconies and walkways make the situation seem alive and create a pleasant atmosphere all over the pedestrian zone. Adjacent, a department building of the University of Applied Sciences is located, which will make the computer science faculty of the university more attractive. At the end of the activity axis, a representative office building forms the head building and leads on the west side to the campus.
